To any parent thinking of sending your child to a behavioral school. First let me start by saying I was First introduced to this institution in the 1980's my mother and uncle had wanted to have me admitted, after a school visit with myself, mom, uncle and school staff. We witnessed a student smash a desk over another one's head. Fortunately for me my mother saw this and declined to admit me. However she did admit me to elan 1 in Poland springs Maine. Complete mental torture and brainwashing. Have patience with your kids, you will do them more harm then good by ever admitting them to such cruel schools. I speak from the heart and give you the 💯 truth. Good luck and God bless 🙌

A family member was a patient. The therapist was excellent. The front desk / phone staff were a bit rude, condescending and obstructionist in our few interactions. Not great when you're working with people who are there because they're seeking help. However, professional staff and particularly the group therapist seemed great. They were in the process of setting up outpatient care. We were seeing clear benefits at home, and the family member was self-advocating to stay in the program for a little longer. After our family member had to go to the ER and for a short hospital stay, the program refused to resume care, leaving this patient on their own without even a psychiatrist or therapist assigned. This seems like one of those cases where a great medical team is spoiled by administrative staff and bureaucracy.

Unfortunately I know someone close to me that went here. They were kicked out for a dirty urine when they were honest. To me recovery isn’t just about how long you stay clean, but it’s also about changing your attitude. Someone that used to lie told the truth. That showed big changes. Instead of using a fake urine like other people there they told the truth. But I guess that’s how life is right. Cheaters win… If someone tells the truth and wants to get help, then they shouldn’t be kicked out. Just upsetting to me how things were handled there. But hoping they help others!

My 15 year old son was admitted there for aggressive and explosive behaviors. He was sent there because I, as his primary care giver, could not handle him at home due to his physical strength that exceeded my capacity. We were in pretty dangerous situations multiple times and I was utterly desperate. That being said, I did not expect a perfect environment for him there because there is no such place. I set my expectations reasonably about what would be going on there. There were some issues that concerned me while he was there, but I was able to contact the therapists for my son pretty easily and they were trying to address the concerns. My son had two therapists during his stay because they moved him to another building at some point, and both of them were great and treated my son kindly. Initially the medication change did not work for my son and made his symptoms worse, but they were able to change and add new medications to get his condition more stabilized. The people's jobs to take care of the kids there are not easy, and I approached them with respect and thankfulness because I believed they did what they could do to take care of my son there. I saw many complaints about this place in bad reviews, but if people set their expectations reasonably and work with the facility team with respectful and thankful attitude, they will see that the facility is doing what they can do to help the kids and the families. It is not a five star hotel, so if anyone expects that kind of service there, they will be disappointed and will have many things to complain about. But for me, the bottom line is that my son was there safely, and they were trying to accommodate his needs while he was there. My son's condition still is not completely stabilized because they did not have time to finish titration of his medications, which we will have to work with an outpatient psychiatrist. But, he came back home in a better condition than when he went there. So I am willing to give them a 5 star review because I believe this place is helping many families.

Yep I was wrong, worse than the guidance center. Waited 6 months for a Indian guy to meet with me over a zoom call that I had to go into the office for, having horrible anxiety attacks and their solution was "let's try Prozac again". It's just so sad these people should lose their medical licenses or go back to india.

Needed to stop my daughter’s care here due to job loss/insurance change. I have in writing, from the counselor, that if we wanted to come back to just message. I did so and was advised to call the number. Then I was informed my daughter was discharged and could not see that provider and would need to go back on the waitlist-list (it’s only been 5 months since last seen). I asked how long the wait list is and was advised several months, but it is always changing. I informed them I never received a discharge letter and it wasn’t in my daughter’s mychart. I was told, “well it’s there.” I told ”Melinda” again that I was just in the chart and it is not there. Melinda again repeated, well it is there. I asked for a supervisor to call me back, but I am not so sure I will hear back.

I had a good experience there. This facility has a great approach to recovery. They except the fact that addiction is a disease! Many facilities will merely focus on the act of using rather than why you used, thus harsh punishments and even evictions. There groups are large but, that isn't an excuse for you not to grasp your recovery.

If Kafka and a broken game of telephone had a child, it would be this facility—equal parts confusion, contradiction, and the uncanny ability to make you question reality while insisting everything is “clinically appropriate.” This place markets itself as a therapeutic environment, but in practice it often feels like an immersive experience in how to professionally sideline parents while calling it best practice. You may arrive expecting to be part of your child’s treatment. That expectation will be gently, systematically, and very efficiently dismantled. Communication here deserves special recognition. It is not merely inconsistent—it is almost an art form. You will receive updates that are vague enough to say nothing, yet somehow structured in a way that suggests something important was said. Asking follow-up questions is a bit like chasing a shadow: you can try, but you won’t catch anything solid. Parental involvement appears to operate on a Schrödinger’s cat model—you are both included and excluded at the same time, depending on who you ask and what day it is. Legally responsible? Yes. Practically informed? That’s more of a philosophical concept. As for treatment, if the objective is to reinforce avoidance, escalate conflict, and create distance within a family unit, then the program is impressively consistent. If the goal is accountability, stability, and repair, those outcomes are… harder to locate. Perhaps they are kept in the same place as the clear answers. There is a uniquely unsettling experience in watching a system designed to help families instead function like a slow-motion exercise in separating them, all while maintaining a tone of calm professionalism. It’s almost admirable—like watching someone rearrange deck chairs and confidently call it navigation. To be fair, the staff may very well believe in what they are doing. But belief does not replace transparency, and process does not equal progress—no matter how many times it is repeated in meetings. Families come here in crisis, trusting they will be part of the solution. Instead, you may find yourself piecing together your child’s situation like a puzzle where half the pieces are missing and the other half come from a different box. And then there’s Act 147—the facility’s favorite magic trick. Not as a tool for collaboration, but as a convenient legal curtain to hide behind. It allows decisions to be made around families, over families, and despite families, all while maintaining the polished illusion that everything is above board. It’s not just a shield—it’s an exit strategy from accountability, wrapped in policy language and signed off as “best practice.” If you are considering this facility, ask yourself one question: Do you want to actively participate in your child’s care—or would you prefer the occasional vague reassurance that something, somewhere, is happening? Because here, those are very different experiences. And if their response to this sounds familiar, it should—it will likely be the same polished, empathetic non-answer families receive privately: appreciative in tone, meticulously worded, and carefully constructed to acknowledge everything while clarifying nothing.

Terrible experience with these people besides running programs which are useless and a waste of time they also don't care about their clients well being or providing or following any of the standards outlined in the American theraputic standards. Furthermore, they've manipulated records, mislead me, lied and conduct business in a predatory fashion as none of the clients there are there of their ownn free will. These people are exploiting a vulnerable community forcing usless programs.which have zero statistical data to substantiate the effacy of their programs and will literally say anything to get their way or turn the tables. Ive never been more disgusted with a group of people in my life. I feel they should be held accountable as they would never treat a patient that wasent forced to be there in the manner that they treat their patient's and its unacceptable and they believe they answer to no one which is their arrogance on full display. They believe they can release anythimg and everything to parole amd expect you to have a level of trust or theraputic relationship when in reality no other therapist releases anything thst is not comoletly necessary in order to be client with parole thus again showing you whonthey actually work for which it isn't the clients. There is no metrics for completing the programs it's when they think tour remorseful enough and only then can you complete the program, meaning that as long as they've got openings your going to be enrolled monthly so they can continue to keep the $ rolling in.

My therapist Aleysha is absolutely Wonderful. In all my years (57) and a lifetime of therapy, this is the first time I have felt safe and able to tell my whole story. She is kind and caring and with my OK she calls me out in a caring way, of how I could have maybe handled a situation differently. For me, I need that accountability. She is just the person I need in my life. Just happy with all my productive sessions with Aleysha and for once in my life I actually (no lie) look forward to seeing her. The front end staff is wonderful also!! Missy is absolutely wonderful and so kind and accommodating. Thank you all for your kindness and understanding of my mental health journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I compare mental health providers in Pennsylvania?
When comparing providers in Pennsylvania, consider location relative to where you live or work, the specific services offered, levels of care available (such as outpatient, intensive outpatient, or inpatient), therapy approaches used, conditions treated, hours of operation, whether a website is available, accreditation status, and reviews when listed. Not all details are available for every provider, so it can help to check each facility listing directly.
What should I ask before contacting a provider in Pennsylvania?
Before reaching out to a provider, it helps to know what you are looking for. Consider asking about current appointment availability, accepted insurance plans and self-pay or sliding-scale options, whether telehealth appointments are offered, which specific services are currently active, and whether the provider has experience treating your particular concern. Availability and services can change, so confirming details directly with the facility is recommended.
Are all services listed on Mental Health US available at every facility?
No. Services vary by facility and may change over time. The information shown in each listing reflects what was available when the record was created or last updated. Always confirm current service availability, hours, and intake procedures directly with the provider before visiting or calling.
Can I find both mental health and substance use treatment providers in Pennsylvania?
Yes. Mental Health US includes Pennsylvania providers that offer mental health services, substance use treatment, or both. You can use the available filters to narrow results by treatment needs, or review individual facility pages for more detailed information about the services and conditions each provider treats.
What if I cannot find the right provider in my city?
If you do not find a suitable provider in a specific city, try broadening your search by browsing all Pennsylvania providers using the statewide view, or use the filter dropdowns to search by condition treated, therapy type, or level of care without entering a specific city. You can also browse nearby city pages to see providers in surrounding communities.
