I recommend the Child & Family Guidance Center. I used to bring my child here every week. It was well organized from day 1 during the intake meeting and my child connected with her therapist. She’s really come a long way since the summer. My only complaint is there really needs to be some more diversity in their administration. There should be different individuals from various cultures employed here - not only if you “habla espanol.” My child is no longer attending but I would strongly recommend they make some adjustments to their hiring practices to mirror a diverse clientele. Not EVERY client that attends is Hispanic !

I lived here for a while and found most of the expirience beneficial. The 6 hours of group therapy was tedious at times but helpful. Met a few friends along the journey journey. Emily, Annie, Elizabeth and Peter were some of the friendliest counselors I ever met. Kirsten was the best supervisor ever!!

Some of the male doctors were very nice. One of the female nurses were rude. They made me feel hopeless by mentioning being taken to a hospital every 30 minutes. Some of the male doctors are very nice though, they let me sleep in the visitation room to feel comfortable.

The facility had mold in the sink, which wasn’t addressed for a long time even though it was clearly a health concern. The pool, which is often used in ads and tours, was barely made available for use—it felt like false advertising. More importantly, the way serious situations among residents were handled often felt dismissive and unprofessional. People in emotional crisis were not supported properly, and accountability was often missing. Allowing people whose behavior was clearly not improving to affect others and get rewarded. It’s important to have patients manage those emotions themselves but there are things that can be done on their end to be more understanding and not allowing such behaviors to escalate.

This program is the absolute worst place to get serious about your recovery, the staff is useless. They always tell you to ask the next person instead of helping you with simple requests. Of all the staff there, there’s maybe one or two who actually care enough to get your requests done or care about your recovery to want to help. The program is overall trash, the building is falling apart, the county won’t even fix anything there, constant having bugs and rats running thru the facility. I wouldn’t recommend this to my worst enemy if they were trying to get help.

I was a resident at this facility for 4 years in the late 80s-early 90s. It was divided into 5 houses back then, I was in Monterey. A lot of the staff was amazing and truly cared, some of the staff seemed to be on a power trip. It changed a lot of our lives for the better.

Got here yesterday with low expectations. Greatly exceeded - much worse. The look good on paper, talk a good game about programs and policies. What it is just one low step above living on street. * building is old and solid but no one cares to maintain, upgrade, keep clean. Residence floor looks like an abandoned army barracks from 60's. Slapped some posing on walls - everything else filthy, breaking down and depressing * shared bed area - my assigned bed area was next to the filthy window A/C. Diet and dust everywhere. I accidentally touched the top of nightstand and shocked by random sticky goo liquid. No one mentioned cleaning supplies either! There is a shelf, desk area assigned to me - full of dirt, debris papers. Including two cups with 20 or so random prescrip medications, and pills scattered on surface. Who cleans this nasty place when someone leaves? NO ONE. This place is physically Nasty. I might make a separate post about the people and the program as they call it

Used to be helpful before it was RCS. The woman who answered the call was so quiet, I was not sure it was real. When I started to talk she hung up. I thought I called the wrong number. Redialed only to hear another inaudible sort of murmer. I asked if I was calling the crisis line, if it was local, etc.... I didn't get a real answer but an annoyed woman telling me yes, that I woke her up, and asking what she wanted me to do.

The office never called to tell me that my practioner was out sick, so I just drove an hour and wasted that gas for nothing. They tried to lie and say they called. I confirmed they have my correct number. I had the lady who claimed to have called call me and my phone rang and it showed their name. I showed her my call log and that their name wasn't on there. I told her if she had just been honest and said she forgot I could accept that as an answer but she doubled down. I hate it when people waste the limited resources I have and waste my time.

When I was there last September it started ok. But the worst parts were that the day rooms are only open for Groups and meals. One of the groups there was led by Tony and all of his groups all lead to AA or NA topics so if you aren't there for Chemical Dependency or Drugs it is useless. And the rest of the day you either have to be hanging out in the Hallway or your rooms which are counter productive. I would never go there again.

Alaysa Thygersen is a new NP at the Euclid office in the San Diego location. I WOULD GIVE HER ZERO STARS IF I COULD... I am writing to formally express my extreme dissatisfaction with my recent appointment. Despite my current COVID-19 diagnosis and debilitating weakness, the provider insisted I undergo a chest X-ray for "shortness of breath" and "possible pneumonia"—symptoms I explicitly stated I am not experiencing. My actual clinical presentation consisted of severe flu-like symptoms, including extreme fatigue, body aches, and debilitating headaches. The provider refused to issue a necessary work excuse unless I completed this office visit, disregarding my need for rest and my actual symptoms. As a professional with 13 years of tenure at my job, I find this lack of patient-centered care and clinical intuition unacceptable. This approach prioritizes rigid protocols over the patient’s well-being and clear feedback. Furthermore, I have noted that this provider has only been a licensed Nurse Practitioner for four years, having received her license in 2022. Now, in 2026, it is clear that her current diagnostic approach and lack of professional bedside manner are lacking; at the rate she is going, she will never reach the level of a medical doctor (MD). In my view, anyone seeking medical care should look for a different professional; I certainly would not put my life in her hands. I will be seeking a new provider who values a collaborative relationship and respects patient autonomy. I hope this feedback serves as a stern reminder of the need for improved communication and a more nuanced diagnostic approach

Discovery Behavioral Health has truly been a life-changing place for me. As someone who works in social services and has experienced painful trauma myself, I can’t express enough how grateful I am that I found this program. From the very first day, I felt seen, heard, and supported in ways I never expected. The team here is intentional in everything they do—they genuinely meet you where you’re at. Every staff member I encountered was kind, compassionate, and incredibly understanding. They don’t just treat you like a patient or a case; they care for you as a whole person, with dignity and respect. It was such a comfort to walk into a space where I felt safe and cared for, especially during a season of my life when I felt so broken. This program has been instrumental in helping stabilize me and increase my quality of life. The skills, encouragement, and consistent support I’ve received here have made a lasting impact, not only in my recovery but also in how I move forward with hope and resilience. I honestly don’t know where I would be if it weren’t for the staff and the environment they create at Discovery. If you are struggling and looking for a place that will embrace you with compassion while also equipping you with tools for healing and growth, I cannot recommend Discovery Behavioral Health enough. They have been such a blessing to my journey, and I am forever thankful for the role they’ve played in my recovery.

I went to farmers market with my granddaughter(pronouns they/them), I was supporting them going into the center and really excited to be a part of this wonderful resource for them. We walked in and the guy signing in my granddaughter, put his arm out and said “this is not a place for you to hang out, this a safe space for youth “. I said I’m with my granddaughter . I turned around and left because I didn’t “as a black woman” feel welcomed at all. Shouldn’t this center be welcoming to all.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I compare mental health providers in California?
When comparing providers in California, consider location relative to where you live or work, the specific services offered, levels of care available (such as outpatient, intensive outpatient, or inpatient), therapy approaches used, conditions treated, hours of operation, whether a website is available, accreditation status, and reviews when listed. Not all details are available for every provider, so it can help to check each facility listing directly.
What should I ask before contacting a provider in California?
Before reaching out to a provider, it helps to know what you are looking for. Consider asking about current appointment availability, accepted insurance plans and self-pay or sliding-scale options, whether telehealth appointments are offered, which specific services are currently active, and whether the provider has experience treating your particular concern. Availability and services can change, so confirming details directly with the facility is recommended.
Are all services listed on Mental Health US available at every facility?
No. Services vary by facility and may change over time. The information shown in each listing reflects what was available when the record was created or last updated. Always confirm current service availability, hours, and intake procedures directly with the provider before visiting or calling.
Can I find both mental health and substance use treatment providers in California?
Yes. Mental Health US includes California providers that offer mental health services, substance use treatment, or both. You can use the available filters to narrow results by treatment needs, or review individual facility pages for more detailed information about the services and conditions each provider treats.
What if I cannot find the right provider in my city?
If you do not find a suitable provider in a specific city, try broadening your search by browsing all California providers using the statewide view, or use the filter dropdowns to search by condition treated, therapy type, or level of care without entering a specific city. You can also browse nearby city pages to see providers in surrounding communities.
