This place is a joke. Places like this is the reason why alot of people don't seek mental health treatment. There's way too many hoops to jump through. People making the 'rules' for this place are sitting in a nice office collecting a fat paycheck, as the clients or potential clients suffer. Another thing is that the Emporia office is consistently filthy. A guy is supposed to clean, but doesn't. Feces on the wall and light switch, and the kids area is ridiculously filthy. Public health hazard here. They were quick to put up plexiglass for covid, but don't even do routine cleaning a sanitation. As for the substance use classes, the literature is OUTDATED, big-time, and instead of pushing TOTAL abstinence, they have seemingly 'partnered' with MAT centers. The therapist is awesome, but ends after 12 sessions. This is WRONG! I've tried to reach the head people in the Petersburg office, but they can't even be bothered to return a call. In all honesty, this place needs to be shut down.

I am frustrated with this agency ..it seems like they fall apart...in the beginning services that they are providing to my daughter was not explain properly...they were changing case manager every couple months. For several years we have case management that was just stop with out notice...staff said that was the directors fault. They are inconsistent with services to my daughter..which makes it more stressful. With what i experienced, I would not recommend this agency . They will drive you insane

I recently visited True North Clinic with a family member and we chose to leave shortly after arriving. One of the staff members, Jen Fariss, smelled strongly of cigarettes and I overheard her and a few coworkers gossiping about another staff member, including using mental health diagnoses as insults. This felt extremely unprofessional and inappropriate, especially in a mental health setting. Mental health is not a joke, and hearing staff speak this way made the environment feel unsafe and not supportive. I hope the clinic addresses these concerns to create a more respectful and professional atmosphere.

I would say the program works I took a lot out of every seccion! safety on the other hand they do not know how to handle that, I was assaulted on one of the houses they did nothing but kick me out of the program, I felt hopeless with more trauma than I had before getting in. And lost the trust of talking how I felt because I told everyone that I did not feel safe around the person who put hands on my neck and left me scratched around, they had the nerve to have us both under the same roof, it didn't matter anything I said they made it look like I deserved it, I would think twice before going in there that was kind of racist, am Spanish and most of the people there was white I felt like they didn't understood me the clinicians specially it was their job to keep me safe and they fail by prioritizing the person who almost choked me to death, I wish I could go back on time and just declined staying there there's lot more places much better ones they prioritize people who's paying with Cash and the ones who pay by insurance or other programs like myself we are not on the same level when it comes to be treated fair they break their own rules...... I wish I could go back and call the police they would of handle that situation better with better results just to educate clinicians and owners should know better than what they did to me...... Oh by the way the nurse didn't even checked my neck after the incident so they did me wrong since day 1 till the end..

Clients are not assessed and matched with a counselor to meet their needs. The confidentiality agreement is never reviewed with the client so that questions can be asked. Appointments are cut short from the one hour time frame to 45 minutes. Counselor Peter Schmidt was late to every appointment and never offered more time or made up time he missed. When Peter Schmidt was asked to honor the 45 minute appointment that was paid for by my insurance company, he started calling me names and using put downs instead of acting professionally and fielding a legitimate question. I recommend everybody to look elsewhere to have your counseling needs met. This was a terrible experience with unprofessional counselors!

I am writing the review I wish I could have seen before having my child admitted to the residential treatment facility. He was there for 8 months. It was an overall positive experience for both myself and my kid. They came out with the tools to regulate sobriety and anger, which were both major issues prior to admission.

Horrible experience except for psychiatrist who was excellent.Staff supposed to work as a team which absolutely did not occur. Staff did not communicate with each other. Case Managers did not do their jobs at all. Medical doctors and NP are rushed and condescending. No processing therapy only teaching and playing games, puzzles, and coloring. Nurses were not trustworthy and did not do their jobs. Would never recommend this hospital and will never go back here under any circumstances.

The other negative reviews here got replies that said they could neither confirm nor deny that the reviewer was ever actually a patient. I would be happy to provide proof that I was a patient at Panacea for years. This review reflects my recent experience. I worked with Panacea for years. I was with one practitioner for over a year, and then another who I saw for over a year, and I had a positive experience with each of them. After they left the practice, I was reassigned to someone who trained under my previous provider. Unfortunately, I only saw her twice before getting reassigned again to another person who had recently been trained. I'll call her J. After our first session, J forgot to call in a prescription for my anxiety medication. I didn't realize until I tried to call in the refill. I had to call the office every day for several days before this was rectified. Not having my medication for so many days was very destabilizing. When I brought this up at our second session, J seemed unconcerned, though she did apologize. I checked my scripts right away this time, only to find that she had forgotten the same script again. When I called about this, I was told to call again "a few days" before I ran out. When I did, I was told that J had gone on maternity leave and that I would be reassigned again, and that they could not help me with the prescription. Fortunately, I had found a new NP by this time, who called the script in right away. (I recommend Rock Landing There were also problems with the billing system. I was billed twice for each session for months. Each month, I would get an email with my copay, which I would pay right away. The next month, I would be billed for the recent session and the session I had already paid for. On two occasions, I received phone calls the day before an appointment demanding that I pay the entire balance (again) if I wanted to keep my appointment. This did stop after I spoke with billing, but I was never reimbursed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I compare mental health providers in Virginia?
When comparing providers in Virginia, consider location relative to where you live or work, the specific services offered, levels of care available (such as outpatient, intensive outpatient, or inpatient), therapy approaches used, conditions treated, hours of operation, whether a website is available, accreditation status, and reviews when listed. Not all details are available for every provider, so it can help to check each facility listing directly.
What should I ask before contacting a provider in Virginia?
Before reaching out to a provider, it helps to know what you are looking for. Consider asking about current appointment availability, accepted insurance plans and self-pay or sliding-scale options, whether telehealth appointments are offered, which specific services are currently active, and whether the provider has experience treating your particular concern. Availability and services can change, so confirming details directly with the facility is recommended.
Are all services listed on Mental Health US available at every facility?
No. Services vary by facility and may change over time. The information shown in each listing reflects what was available when the record was created or last updated. Always confirm current service availability, hours, and intake procedures directly with the provider before visiting or calling.
Can I find both mental health and substance use treatment providers in Virginia?
Yes. Mental Health US includes Virginia providers that offer mental health services, substance use treatment, or both. You can use the available filters to narrow results by treatment needs, or review individual facility pages for more detailed information about the services and conditions each provider treats.
What if I cannot find the right provider in my city?
If you do not find a suitable provider in a specific city, try broadening your search by browsing all Virginia providers using the statewide view, or use the filter dropdowns to search by condition treated, therapy type, or level of care without entering a specific city. You can also browse nearby city pages to see providers in surrounding communities.
