I have never felt so disrespected, dismissed, and dehumanized in my life the way I did at J. Cole House Recovery Homes Inc. From day one, it didn’t feel like a recovery program — it felt like control, intimidation, and power trips disguised as “treatment.” My counselor, Lavar, barely did anything but sit in the office on his phone. Staff walked around barking orders like they were running a boot camp, not a place meant to help people heal. You can’t lay down. You can’t rest. You have to stay moving all day just to look “busy.” It felt cold, institutional, and fake. One house phone for over twenty adults. No personal phones at all. They take both of yours at intake and cut you off from the outside world. The food was terrible. The atmosphere was worse. Nobody really listens. Nobody really cares. You’re treated like a number, not a human being trying to rebuild their life. The most painful part? My uncle’s funeral. On February 5th, during intake, the FIRST thing I told them was that my uncle’s funeral was on the 7th. Instead of compassion, I was told to “prove it.” Prove my own uncle’s funeral was real — like I was lying to escape treatment. Meanwhile, they had already taken both my phones, which had all the information. They wouldn’t even let me access one for five minutes to show proof. The funeral was literally a few buildings down the street at Higgins Mortuary on A Street. Walking distance. My own mother called them the day of the funeral asking them to let me go. They still said no. “Nothing we can do.” That was a lie. They could have done something — they just chose not to. I packed my bags that day. I was furious and heartbroken. I stayed only because my mom told me I’d regret leaving. And a few days later, they discharged me anyway. Another client lied and told staff I brought alcohol into the house. The truth? I found alcohol in the backyard and was on my way to turn it in when he ran to tell on me first. Staff searched me, found it, and immediately decided I was guilty. No camera check. No breathalyzer. No investigation. No fairness. They took his word over mine without a second thought. Just, “Pack your stuff.” So I did. I walked to my mom’s house, changed clothes, and went straight to the hospital to get cleared to go back to detox at Pueblos Del Sol — even though I hadn’t had a single drink in ten days. That’s how serious I was about staying clean. That’s how committed I was to changing. And they threw me out like I was nothing. This place claims to help people fight addiction, but the way I was treated was humiliating and careless. They kept me from my uncle’s funeral that was right down the street. They let a lie erase ten days of progress without evidence. They showed me exactly how little my effort meant to them. I came there trying to better myself. Trying to change. Trying to do the right thing. And they made it clear that none of that mattered.

This is my primary care medicine home. I love the people here and I have been coming here for over ten years. The doctors and nurse practitioners are great and the nurses are very helpful. They have someone to do the lab work on site, so that is very helpful. You rarely have to wait long to be seen once you get there and they offer plenty of resources if you need them. Their referral department is fast and helpful as well. Over all I feel very fortunate to have them as my medical care facility.

Center for discovery really helped me with my ED. The other patients were some of the most amazing group of people I have ever met. This place helped me realize my worth and that I am more than my ED. Rooth is a queen, so is Daisy and Jo. The staff here are so supportive and kind. This was a great expirience.

If you love your child and want them to get better, do NOT send them here. There are not enough words to describe how truly awful Newport is. They claim to care and value their patients but that could not be further from the truth. The care coordinators are unprofessional and disrepectful. They do not properly support the patients needs and they blame your child for their illness. You are essentially paying for your child to be traumatized.

Really great and affordable therapy. Highly recommend. Definitely disagree with 1 star person below, they are compassionate, professional and patient. Not a scam. Lots of therapists to choose from, and they are sensitive to self employed/lower income people who are trying to better themselves but can't afford all the other location's $100-$200/hr.

The last time I came to this facility was for urgent care. I came in for abnormally bad heart palpitations, worse than what I would consider normal for me. It had persisted for a few days and I could not focus on anything. The check-in process was fairly easy. I did not wait long, maybe 15 minutes, until my name was called. After about an hour of various tests and talks with the doctors they deduced it was just anxiety. The heart palpitations calmed down the following day. The service was very mixed. Some of the people I encountered were polite, others were cold and dismissive. Though I should probably give them the benefit of the doubt, since it was getting late and they were close to closing. Overall, the experience here could have definitely been more comfortable, but I have had way, WAY worse experiences at other medical facilities. It’s a good thing my heart palpitations had calmed down, sure, but not because of any actual treatment… 3/5.

This is one of the best facilities my daughter could have gone to when residential treatment becomes an option. The teachers here are amazing. They truly want their students to succeed. Our family therapist connected with my daughter so well that she was able to open up in a comfortable environment and be herself. The whole team did a phenomenal job in advocating for her needs and meeting us where we were at!

I can not say enough amazing things about Newport Institute. I went to a house in Orange County. The staff were the kindest, most genuine people. The therapy was incredibly helpful. They listened to me with all of my fears of residential and made it a beautiful experience. The house was amazing, the other clients I still stay in touch with. Best experience. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because my insurance cut and I was given 12 hour notice to leave. They helped me find another place but that place was awful and I booked a flight home within 48 hours. Newport the facility was beautiful and amazing. I would go back in a heartbeat if I could. I wish they would not have referred to such a bad second place.

Within a short amount of time, they made such a positive impact on his mental health, overall well-being, and outlook on life. The staff and house manager are very warm, caring, and passionate about what they do. Great communication with the individual, family, and clinical program to provide the best care possible. attending San Fernando Community Mental Health Center for 4 yrs ! Going here I contained Ups and Downs like every place remember no place is perfect. I would like to thank the supervisor Vanessa she was very helpful and she's a remarkably good human being, as well as my Therapist Maria V. , and Thomas my case Manager Those three are very passionate about there jobs! Now let's start with the downs I must warn you I wouldn't get with the Case Manager Jose hes not on top of his job , he's very heartless and he likes to down people, I also had a Case Manager named David who informed me I was his favorite client because he didint have to do certain stuff hmm sir thats your job that is what you attended School and got this profession for is to assist individuals! My 2 worst experiences 1. I was doing a tremendous job in Fsp my mental health was fantastic I was receiving the proper amount of care that was necessary for my state and the Therapist Aldo Sarelleno was very forceful and demanding into getting me to go down to RRR program! I also to this day will not forget the amount of negative comments I received from aldo sarrelleno he was very downing ! Aldo was alawys late or alawys canceling!

I actually loved this place. Great on so many levels. I moved here to participate. They helped facilitate a new way to approach my addiction. However, no aftercare! I seemed to be left to figure out this problem that runs very deep in me in my own. They give a foundation, but DO NOT bank on support after. Kinda not the coolest. I want to give an honest update. This update comes 3 months after original post, and I think it’s only fair to anyone looking into this treatment center that I give additional info. I am currently sober. Have been for about 3 months. I live in an SLE like suggested by staff at NLCS. I am working and ridiculously grateful for this life my God has blessed me with. I can not rightfully take away that New Life gave me some of the blocks that I am currently using in my foundation. Could things have been better? Sure. But what I’ve gained outweighs any complaint I may have. Try it. New Life I mean.

I would like to inform everyone of the outstanding services I have received at the curry senior center by my therapist, Diana Plitt. I have had therapy sessions with her over the last six months, during this period she has been working conscientiously. She was always thorough and she showed a lot of empathy. Specifically, on one occasion when I received two consecutive lease violation notices from my building management, which I perceived as laying the foundation for my eviction, I was going through a very bad anxiety which resulted in panic attacks. I contacted her and informed her of that. She acted very professionally and contacted me momentarily and talked to me and gave a bunch of advice for dealing with the dilemma which I found very helpful. Only then did I find out she really cares about her clients wellbeing. She also added that I could always contact her on the phone or through email if my condition worsens and she will do whatever it takes to get me through this. Her kindly and super nice disposition is very healing. Thank you very much for being so cautious about placing the very best condition for this position.

My parents own corks stop liquor in the parking lot across the street and I have constantly ran into kids from this center out after times they should not be. These kids have also introduced drugs and such into the area, but these are a select few that should not represent all the kids they take care of. I'm aware that kids will get into trouble and won't always be able to be stopped, but the facility should cracking down on this activity. EDIT:over the last three years there has been significant improvement. The kids are not allowed to loiter and very few stay out past midnight like before.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I compare mental health providers in California?
When comparing providers in California, consider location relative to where you live or work, the specific services offered, levels of care available (such as outpatient, intensive outpatient, or inpatient), therapy approaches used, conditions treated, hours of operation, whether a website is available, accreditation status, and reviews when listed. Not all details are available for every provider, so it can help to check each facility listing directly.
What should I ask before contacting a provider in California?
Before reaching out to a provider, it helps to know what you are looking for. Consider asking about current appointment availability, accepted insurance plans and self-pay or sliding-scale options, whether telehealth appointments are offered, which specific services are currently active, and whether the provider has experience treating your particular concern. Availability and services can change, so confirming details directly with the facility is recommended.
Are all services listed on Mental Health US available at every facility?
No. Services vary by facility and may change over time. The information shown in each listing reflects what was available when the record was created or last updated. Always confirm current service availability, hours, and intake procedures directly with the provider before visiting or calling.
Can I find both mental health and substance use treatment providers in California?
Yes. Mental Health US includes California providers that offer mental health services, substance use treatment, or both. You can use the available filters to narrow results by treatment needs, or review individual facility pages for more detailed information about the services and conditions each provider treats.
What if I cannot find the right provider in my city?
If you do not find a suitable provider in a specific city, try broadening your search by browsing all California providers using the statewide view, or use the filter dropdowns to search by condition treated, therapy type, or level of care without entering a specific city. You can also browse nearby city pages to see providers in surrounding communities.
