I went to see a therapist or counselor here named Virgil Kovachich, and I wish I never had. He was unprofessional, disrespectful, and racist. I'm incredibly self-aware, and I've been on a journey of growth and change for 20 years. I live my life with intention and purpose. I'm not perfect and have messed up, but I'm intentional about learning from and mitigating my mistakes. I was explaining to him that I have an issue with feelings of disconnection and isolation that often lead me to seek connection in people, places, or activities that are risky or harmful to me. Virgil wouldn't accept that. He tried to make me wrong, arguing that I couldn't have felt isolated in Milwaukee because, and I quote, "it's a bit bigger than St. Johnsbury", like that has anything to do with being connected. He likened my struggles with aphasia and speech after a stroke to his living in another country and told me I needed to shut up and listen to him. I thought he was supposed to be the one listening. He wouldn't allow me to be the one who had ownership of my story. At least once in each of the 3 visits I had, he interrupted me while I spoke and told me that part of my story wasn't real or relevant. When I advocated for myself, he threatened me with unfavorable recommendations and actually followed through after I finally walked out on him. Virgil never tried to hear MY story. Instead, reacted with condescension and snide remarks when what I said didn't match the prejudiced narrative he made up. After I walked out, he regurgitated the tired, overused trope that I was aggressive and threatening because everyone will believe that of a black man. When I called to speak to someone else, I was connected to Nick D. (Dobb or Dubb) and was hung up on after telling my story. Virgil then followed through with his threat to use the tiny power he had to write unfavorable recommendations about me. I've never had an experience like this with a therapist before. I've had therapists I didn't like, but I just went to a different one. This one dehumanized me, disrespected me, and undervalued me, then retaliated against me with punitive recommendations. He is the epitome of unprofessional and has no right to be in the position he is in. I encourage you to advocate for yourself when he tries to gaslight you into believing the life you lived, struggles you've overcome, and progress you've made aren't real. I will be filing a formal complaint and doing all I can to get him removed from his position.

Never any kind of help at all. Would rather see people waste away in their diseases than actually offer any kind of real support. They are great in hiding behind hipa and any other out they can find. A failing organization that offers nothing but a waste of time and referrals to any other resources that are not them. I bet I would have received tons of help if I were looking for free drugs or needles. I hate this place

Peter "Bert" Henry was cool enough at our first meeting and the second meeting as I was speaking somewhat cryptically and taking a minute to warm up to the sensitive topic, he got very aggressive and intolerant basically demanding I spit it out. So I terminated. Not a very client-centered clinician.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I compare mental health providers in Vermont?
When comparing providers in Vermont, consider location relative to where you live or work, the specific services offered, levels of care available (such as outpatient, intensive outpatient, or inpatient), therapy approaches used, conditions treated, hours of operation, whether a website is available, accreditation status, and reviews when listed. Not all details are available for every provider, so it can help to check each facility listing directly.
What should I ask before contacting a provider in Vermont?
Before reaching out to a provider, it helps to know what you are looking for. Consider asking about current appointment availability, accepted insurance plans and self-pay or sliding-scale options, whether telehealth appointments are offered, which specific services are currently active, and whether the provider has experience treating your particular concern. Availability and services can change, so confirming details directly with the facility is recommended.
Are all services listed on Mental Health US available at every facility?
No. Services vary by facility and may change over time. The information shown in each listing reflects what was available when the record was created or last updated. Always confirm current service availability, hours, and intake procedures directly with the provider before visiting or calling.
Can I find both mental health and substance use treatment providers in Vermont?
Yes. Mental Health US includes Vermont providers that offer mental health services, substance use treatment, or both. You can use the available filters to narrow results by treatment needs, or review individual facility pages for more detailed information about the services and conditions each provider treats.
What if I cannot find the right provider in my city?
If you do not find a suitable provider in a specific city, try broadening your search by browsing all Vermont providers using the statewide view, or use the filter dropdowns to search by condition treated, therapy type, or level of care without entering a specific city. You can also browse nearby city pages to see providers in surrounding communities.
