If I could give 0 stars for Dr. Wheeler I would. She lets her own personal opinion effect her ability to treat patients. She has completely ruined my life and affected my employment. I sent a Med Cert numerous times for Dr. Wheeler to complete to the email address and never once received a reply. Not one single response from anyone at Cedar Centre. The only response I have ever received from anyone there was a bill. That is all they care about. They do not care about a patient's well being or mental health. Avoid this place at all costs!

Meh, if DESPERATE & have no insurance at all maybe I would recommend them. There ARE some good Drs & staff, yet there’s some pretty rude staff and an ARNP who should be let go to be honest (maybe another profession for her?) Sarah Kane who was NOT a good help at all! Very rude, pushy, & I left AMA to take care of myself as I know lots of natural remedies. She said I could die without her treatment of antibiotics (allergies to almost all) & basically TOLD me I WILL take my tetanus shot after saying I don’t do those! I told her about an antibiotic patch that a surgeon helped me before with; she said they don’t exist. Yes they do! They are silver alginate, Walgreens’s, & another called antibacterial non-stick pads (CVS). So with the pads at CVS, manuka honey/silvex, & ace wrap…still ALIVE AND back to normal without drugs! ADVOCATE for yourself around this area or move to a city like Denver, CO where med professionals are BETTER & also push natural remedies like MJ, WAY better than man made drugs for nausea, pain, sleep & more! Social workers are not that helpful, I could do what they do at home, & found accurate information. DO NOT TRUST easily here or anywhere, ALWAYS get another opinion at least, fact check and ADVOCATE for yourself…especially in such a small city that is not as knowledgeable as larger ones. Had to come back here as a crisis center stole my medication I believe, filed a police report. They were kind to me yet the Dr ( if you can call her that) was not that nice and barely helped. God have mercy, it’s a hit or miss here all the time. I would love to start my own clinic, and ACTUALLY help to where no one would be left without knowing or care they need.

Very professional!! I went to two different places to do my evaluation for my court ordered for owi. The two places I went they truly didn't listen and were rude but this place was amazing!! I highly recommend! Jessica really listened to me and was extremely kind. She got my stuff over to the court and dot too really fast. If it wasn't for her I would still be stuck at a rude place with a councilor who was making me substance abuse classes for absolutely nothing but for my money. I can't thank this place enough and Jessica. My dad and I left this place crying in tears of joy because the horrible battle was finally over.

I really don’t know what to say. I have been with Zion for 8 years. My psychiatrist there retired and he turned me over to a ARNP and said she will take care of you. First meeting she said she was removing me from a medication I had been on for 20 years. She switched me to several different psych meds that ruined me. I was then put back on the previous med and rapidly tapered going through severe withdrawals and begged them to slow down the taper as the swift reductions were making me very, very ill. She would not. My last meeting with her I was homeless, lost my wife and kids, and my job. All because she did not want to do reporting measures on my medication. I am now going through BIND from being taking off quickly. BIND is severe neurological disorder caused from abrupt benzodiazepine deprescribing causing disabling symptoms. I am completely agoraphobic and bed bound amongst about 35 other severe neurological symptoms. She has no clue what she is doing. There is no cure for BIND other than time. It can take many months to possible years to recover. All over a medication that I was fine taking and 20 years ago was giving to me for severe muscle spasms. This is murder by healthcare.

Loved the therapist, but billing is leading me to need more therapy. Services were rendered for my child at school with the assumption it was covered by insurance…Lo and behold I get my first bill a year later. After having done weekly visits - well you do the math. We stopped services and I voiced my concern about the timeliness of their billing and thought I had settled my debt. Now two years later I just got another bill. This is beyond ridiculous- when will it end? 😩

Parents please don't send your kids here. I went when I was 15 in 2012 for 3 weeks, and for a 48 hour hold when I was 14. While I was there, my most vivid memory was that I threw a crayon(childish, I know) and before I could think, two staff members dragged me to a 'quiet room, a room with cement flooring and concrete walls, no windows. Both staff (thankfully women) stripped me of all my clothes except underwear, they did strip me of my bra as well. And put on me this velcroed quilt gown thing that I had to wear for the next 3 days, which had pretty big arm holes, and as a young teen with no bra wearing that, it was very uncomfortable, especially around male staff. All of that for throwing a crayon. The other distinct memory I have is during 'school hours', a boy about 8 years old, walked over the the trash can and vomited. The teacher made him carry his own vomit, the small trash bag of vomit upstairs to show to staff and have him throw it away himself. He was a child. He had the flu. He also was put in the quiet room at different times. At 8 years old. I was told while I was there that what i was struggling with wasn't a big deal, I had 'good parents and a good home' so I shouldn't be dealing with the struggles I was. Even though there was some gaslighting on my parents part and questionable responses to my behavior, I felt so shameful and guilty for my struggles and like I was wrong to be struggling the way I was and deserved punishment. ADHD, OCD, anxiety and depression doesn't pick a select window of people, it can happen to anybody, doesn't matter they're background. And there was some trauma going on at home at the time that was never addressed nor did cherokee provide a safe environment for me to bring up. The nurse on shift and a staff member said to me the day I left "see you in a month" and the other said "I give it a week". I remember thinking to myself "no matter what im going to prove them wrong, I'm never coming back." And I never did. Now I'm 27 and have gotten actual help, and still working through childhood and other trauma. This place should be shut down. Many staff there shouldnt be there. If you are telling young adult and kid mental health patients that every thing that's happened to them or why theyre admitted there is their fault and guilt them and shame them, you shouldn't be in practice.

I was struggling with depression really bad and missed 3 appointments within 1 year and they put me on same day scheduling. This made it almost impossible to get the help I wanted/needed because my therapist was always booked and needed to schedule weeks in advance. I wanted to think that southern Iowa is a good place, but it is far from it, not to mention extremely overpriced and doesn’t take a lot healthcare options. But the therapist themselves aren’t terrible, just the business, there in it for the money, not the help.

The therapist was wonderful - until she quit! However, dealing with the owner to get a statement was a nightmare! Owner informed therapist she could no longer provide services until the bill was paid in full. I wanted an itemized statement to include payments made by insurance (which is not an unreasonable request ) and the owner would not provide. If you are paying for services yourself, this is not the place to go. The owner is only concerned with bringing in money, not patient mental health.

One star is one to many for this place. Do NOT send anyone you love to this place. They will and has caused years of therapy after our child left this facility. They truly believe they don’t have to talk to the parents on how to figure out what is going on with our child. This Doctor K. failed to do his due diligence in coordination of care and adequately managing our child’s medication and mental health needs. The intake process was nonexistent they told us absolutely nothing. Which made it even worse for us and are child. In order to get anyone to call us back we had to drive hour and half one way and then refuse to leave until they talk to us. They don’t care about anything. From what we have heard about what from our child and her current care team that there were several failures within the process in which our child was put through while in this facility. This place truly needs to be shut down. It’s no wonder why mental health is the way it is specially after dealing with this place. So again DO NOT send anyone you love to this place. You will regret it the moment you walk in the door.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I compare mental health providers in Iowa?
When comparing providers in Iowa, consider location relative to where you live or work, the specific services offered, levels of care available (such as outpatient, intensive outpatient, or inpatient), therapy approaches used, conditions treated, hours of operation, whether a website is available, accreditation status, and reviews when listed. Not all details are available for every provider, so it can help to check each facility listing directly.
What should I ask before contacting a provider in Iowa?
Before reaching out to a provider, it helps to know what you are looking for. Consider asking about current appointment availability, accepted insurance plans and self-pay or sliding-scale options, whether telehealth appointments are offered, which specific services are currently active, and whether the provider has experience treating your particular concern. Availability and services can change, so confirming details directly with the facility is recommended.
Are all services listed on Mental Health US available at every facility?
No. Services vary by facility and may change over time. The information shown in each listing reflects what was available when the record was created or last updated. Always confirm current service availability, hours, and intake procedures directly with the provider before visiting or calling.
Can I find both mental health and substance use treatment providers in Iowa?
Yes. Mental Health US includes Iowa providers that offer mental health services, substance use treatment, or both. You can use the available filters to narrow results by treatment needs, or review individual facility pages for more detailed information about the services and conditions each provider treats.
What if I cannot find the right provider in my city?
If you do not find a suitable provider in a specific city, try broadening your search by browsing all Iowa providers using the statewide view, or use the filter dropdowns to search by condition treated, therapy type, or level of care without entering a specific city. You can also browse nearby city pages to see providers in surrounding communities.
