The evaluation was fast and easy. Howard was professional and clear. Also, he helped me understand all of the questions and had a wonderful attitude while doing it. You can tell he really cared about me. His sense of humor along with his welcoming nature was very refreshing. Great Job Howard!

I am writing this review after a very serious and painful experience. I was a patient of Dr. Mitchell Thompson at Chapa De Indian Health in Grass Valley. He initially appeared kind and professional, but my experience turned out very differently. A few weeks after a treatment, I developed severe pain in a tooth where he had placed a filling. When I came to him and clearly explained that something was wrong and that I was in significant pain, he only looked at the tooth externally, without performing any proper examination, and told me that everything was fine. About six months later, I developed a very severe infection. As a result, I had to have two teeth extracted: the adjacent tooth and the same tooth on which he had done the filling and previously said everything was “fine.” In addition to that, during a tooth extraction he performed, a fragment of the root was left inside my jaw. This later caused another infection and led to further complications and suffering. Another important part of my experience was the way this dentist works. Everything was done extremely fast. He is known in the clinic as “the fast dentist,” and in my experience, this description is accurate in a negative way. Appointments felt rushed, as if the goal was to finish as quickly as possible rather than to fully examine, listen, and care. In my view, this level of speed felt like arrogance rather than efficiency. Proper dental care requires time, sensitivity, eye contact, and real communication with the patient. Rushing through treatments and dismissing concerns shows a lack of respect. This review is not only about technical issues, but also about attitude. There was a clear sense of overconfidence and dismissal of my concerns. When a patient says they are in pain, they deserve to be taken seriously, examined properly, and treated with care and responsibility. In addition to all of the above, a few years after extractions I had done at Chapa De, I was informed by a biological dentist in Brazil (and by another dentist) that, in her professional opinion, four out of five extractions previously done there showed signs of cavitation and chronic inflammation. These findings required additional surgical treatment, which I underwent with her. Dentists are not above their patients — they are meant to serve them. Ignoring symptoms, skipping basic diagnostic steps, and showing arrogance instead of humility can cause real harm. I would also like to add a broader perspective. Modern dentistry is evolving, and biological (holistic) dentistry highlights how closely oral health is connected to the entire body, including inflammation, nutrition, nervous system health, and the materials used in dental treatments. There is much that conventional dentistry can learn from these approaches: the importance of biocompatible materials, understanding the systemic impact of dental procedures, and treating the patient as a whole human being rather than just a tooth. Service, humanity, listening, and respect are essential — and in my experience, these elements were missing here.

So I was an actual client here at evoke treatment at the dove song house twice due to needing further treatment I will say at the beginning I didn’t like it, but that’s because I fought treatment once I started to cooperate and accept treatment. I found myself beginning to heal from my trauma and grow as person and grow in my coping skills and abilities to tolerate distressing situations and cope effectively. I enjoyed the activities in the ability to still feel like a human and not just like a mentally insane person I found that they respected me and treated me fairly. The food was also very good. Our chef Rafa. is an amazing cook. I find that the rooms are comfortable without making it feel too much like you’re at home. I find that they have a happy medium between making it feel Homie and making sure that it is still a treatment facility in the beginning I found the rules hard to follow and thought that the level system was done, but as I started to work on myself and work harder, I understood why they do it that way, and I find it a very effective system. I’ve already recommended this place to a friend who’s still going through treatment facilities and needing more treatment and I have met and seen great people grow further in their mental health. and take the help and add that to their daily lives so I am extensively grateful for evolve because without that treatment I don’t know if I would be here today.

I had a truly positive and meaningful experience during my stay at Madrone Crisis Residential Home. The environment itself is beautiful, peaceful, and surrounded by lovely scenery that genuinely feels like a place meant for healing and recovery. There are also plenty of activities available, which made my stay even more enjoyable—everything from knitting and crocheting, yoga mats for stretching or yoga, workout machines, art supplies for creative projects, beads for making bracelets, and a wide selection of books focused on recovery and substance abuse. What made my stay especially exceptional, though, was the staff. I want to give a heartfelt shoutout to Monsae, AJ, Ariana, and Ray. Each of them went above and beyond to ensure I felt safe, comfortable, and cared for. They were consistently attentive, accommodating, hardworking, and kind. Ariana, in particular, stood out for her attentiveness and compassion—she truly made a difference in my experience. The most impactful part of my stay, however, was working with Jen, the head therapist. I am diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and during certain episodes, I struggle with intense feelings of isolation and anxiety, often convincing myself that everyone dislikes me. During one particularly difficult hypomanic episode, I experienced a severe panic attack while alone in my room. The staff quickly noticed I wasn’t acting like myself and responded immediately. They contacted Jen, knowing I felt safe with her, and she came to support me. Jen knew exactly how to help me deescalate when nothing else was working—not even my usual coping strategies like guided meditation. Her presence, understanding, and skill truly helped me through a moment that felt unbearable. I am incredibly grateful for her. I also want to thank my case manager, Lily, who was attentive, efficient, and proactive. She helped me get approved for benefits in a timely manner and consistently followed through on everything that was needed. Her reliability made a big difference in reducing my stress. Another positive aspect of the program was how manageable everything felt. The chores were simple and easy to keep up with, which made daily life feel structured without being overwhelming. The groups and therapy sessions were on the shorter side, but they were still effective, engaging, and thought-provoking, which I really appreciated. As for feedback, I do believe there are a few areas for improvement. It would be incredibly beneficial for new clients to meet with a therapist within their first week, as adjusting to a new environment can be very anxiety-inducing. From my experience and conversations with peers, this was not always the case. Additionally, while therapists were sometimes available for brief emergency check-ins, I believe structured, weekly therapy sessions should be standard and scheduled automatically rather than only offered upon request. This could potentially prevent crises like the one I experienced. One other observation is that some of the older staff members could be perceived as less approachable or more strict with female clients compared to male clients. I noticed that rules and accountability, particularly around chores and snack policies, were not always enforced equally. Creating a more balanced and fair environment for everyone would make the experience even better. Overall, Madrone is a wonderful place filled with caring, dedicated individuals who truly want to help. The sense of support and compassion I experienced made it feel like a second home. I feel very fortunate to have been placed here and would highly recommend it to anyone in need of a supportive and healing environment. Thank you, Madrone, for everything. (Side note) The two female workers that worked the weekend shifts were also kind and companionate -- Unfortunately I do not remember their names but I wanted to make sure they knew I appreciate there help and calm personalities. Thank you!

Newport Academy has been an amazing asset to our family’s tool chest. Having a son with extreme ADHD, Autism, gender dysphoria, etc. Newport was recommended by our son’s Dr. and saved us at a very difficult time in our lives. Our son stayed at Shingle Springs, CA where we had professional and caring staff that went above and beyond to support our family. After 9-weeks it was determined our son needed a higher level of care and Newport helped us to find the right facility that could help our son further and did the leg work to ensure our insurance was accepted and transportation was seamless. Special shout out to Reanna, Ben, and Laurel whose professionalism and kindness got us through a very difficult time. The family and group therapy sessions have been instrumental to our healing. The Newport app and therapy sessions are available to us indefinitely as alumni’s. We still attend the weekly LGBTQ sessions lead by Reanna, who leads us through discussions that heal the soul well beyond LGBTQ topics. We were blessed to have been referred to Newport!

This office is incredibly unprofessional. I started my treatment in December 2024 but the staff changed my appointment 4 times. I was fine with accommodating as i understand it was the holidays. And im happy to accommodate bc i also worked in healthcare. My second visit was a phone call which no one disclosed or stated in advance that the appt would not be a video meeting. I wasn’t made aware of this until I emailed the staff asking for a meeting link and then told me they had no appointment on file lol of course you don’t why am I not surprised… they squeezed me in 30 min after my original set time. My 3rd appt was this month and I anticipated there would be scheduling issues as there were previously. I emailed one week in advance to avoid this issue. I received confirmation of my appt date and time, and a meeting link! I arrive 5 min early and no one calls or shows up for the first 10 min so I call their office. Their first response was oh but follow up appointments are usually by phone. I was disappointed there was no “hey I’m sorry for the mix up” or “hey I apologize for the wait” they responded like it was my problem when I did my due diligence. There are tons of offices in the metro LA area that operate on a professional level and will apologize without asking for one when they’ve made an error. I would strongly advise you to not seek treatment here bc if they have the lack of care about these small things then I can only imagine how little they care about you and ultimately the progress of your mental health.

The IOP program for this place is just terrible. During the group session we had 3 different therapists take over which seems too much to get any effective work done when the group is constantly rotating the therapist. I only went one time and I can tell right away that the therapists didn't care at all for the people in the group, they were just going through the motions. They were constantly on their phone and laptop and were very disengaged the whole time. One therapist was extremely passive aggressive with me which I thought was hilarious because we just got done talking about effective communication 😆 Just don't bother with this place. I recommend API if you want a program that works and people who actually care.

The staff is amazing and genuinely cares about your recovery and well-being. I was a client for 6 months and received amazing treatment. Cynthia is an amazing facilitator and case manager. She was someone who challenged me to be better when I needed her to. She pushes you to work as hard as you can when you feel like you can't anymore. Ashley found a pattern in my behavior and found the cause, something I had been dealing with for almost ten years and didn’t notice. She genuinely cares about every client and it shows. Vanessa is an amazing therapist who brings fun into sessions and balances heavy topics with light. Cale was my first therapist at Shine and I was nervous to have a male therapist, but he was so easy to talk to and helped me develop skills that make my life a hundred times easier. Bri was one of the people who I clicked with right away. She has my great grandma's lasagna recipe, so you know I trusted her. Mackenzie is a newer case manager, but in the time I've spent with her as a facilitator, she brings humor into group and always brings the mood up. She is so good at getting you to dig deeper that sometimes you don't even notice she's doing it.

I started individual therapy because I felt stuck in a cycle of anxiety and self-doubt that I couldn’t break on my own. From the beginning, my therapist made me feel safe and supported, asking thoughtful questions that helped me uncover patterns I wasn’t aware of. The progress I’ve made has been life-changing. I feel more confident, self-aware, and better equipped to handle challenges. If you’re considering therapy, I can’t recommend it enough—it’s been one of the best investments I’ve made in myself.

I cannot sing the praises of the team at 417 Recovery loudly and broadly enough! HIGHLY recommend 417 Recovery for any parents struggling to find amazing mental health support for a teen in crisis (suicidal ideations, self harm, addictions, etc)…they are absolutely the best! The staff is SO kind and understanding, not only do they make the process easy and provide continual support whenever you need (including very actively monitoring text messages to support families) they really make it a priority to focus on the mental health of not only the children in the program but the family as a whole and without them my son would not be on the better path that he is walking today. He was able to successfully complete and graduate from the program after 8 months and the work and love put into every aspect of his program made us both have a better understanding of what it means to actually focus on maintaining good mental health and that the work to maintain what we’ve gained from the program will continue. With what we learned at 417 I’m confident my teen/new young adult son will thrive and accomplish great things and the support I received will help me (and the rest of our family) be by his side as that happens. I love each and every one of the people we met who were both staff and families within the program and encourage any parent of a teen who is feeling helpless to help their child—CALL THEM!!!

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I compare mental health providers in California?
When comparing providers in California, consider location relative to where you live or work, the specific services offered, levels of care available (such as outpatient, intensive outpatient, or inpatient), therapy approaches used, conditions treated, hours of operation, whether a website is available, accreditation status, and reviews when listed. Not all details are available for every provider, so it can help to check each facility listing directly.
What should I ask before contacting a provider in California?
Before reaching out to a provider, it helps to know what you are looking for. Consider asking about current appointment availability, accepted insurance plans and self-pay or sliding-scale options, whether telehealth appointments are offered, which specific services are currently active, and whether the provider has experience treating your particular concern. Availability and services can change, so confirming details directly with the facility is recommended.
Are all services listed on Mental Health US available at every facility?
No. Services vary by facility and may change over time. The information shown in each listing reflects what was available when the record was created or last updated. Always confirm current service availability, hours, and intake procedures directly with the provider before visiting or calling.
Can I find both mental health and substance use treatment providers in California?
Yes. Mental Health US includes California providers that offer mental health services, substance use treatment, or both. You can use the available filters to narrow results by treatment needs, or review individual facility pages for more detailed information about the services and conditions each provider treats.
What if I cannot find the right provider in my city?
If you do not find a suitable provider in a specific city, try broadening your search by browsing all California providers using the statewide view, or use the filter dropdowns to search by condition treated, therapy type, or level of care without entering a specific city. You can also browse nearby city pages to see providers in surrounding communities.
