The LESC Continuing Day Treatment Program in New York City is a culturally sensitive mental health program dedicated to serving Chinese-speaking individuals through compassionate, community-centered care. Established in 1982 and officially licensed by the New York State Office of Mental Health, this long-standing program provides a vital support system for 18 Chinese clients who benefit from a structured and respectful environment tailored to their unique needs.
Recognizing the longstanding health disparities and trauma faced by the Chinese community, the program is designed to build resilience through individualized and group-focused care. Clients attend four-hour treatment sessions five days a week, engaging in a comprehensive approach that includes crisis management, healthcare access, relaxation techniques, psychoeducation, medication management, and family counseling.
In addition to therapeutic services, the program places a strong emphasis on honoring Chinese culture—celebrating traditional holidays and customs while offering enriching recreational experiences such as museum visits, Circle Line tours, and excursions to city parks. These social activities promote community integration, emotional well-being, and a sense of belonging.
Under the supervision of an on-site psychiatrist, clients receive regular assessments and support to manage medication and, when appropriate, begin reintegrating into the workforce. Family members are also educated on the psychological dynamics of supporting loved ones with mental health challenges, enhancing the healing process at home.
The LESC Continuing Day Treatment Program ultimately aims to improve self-esteem, social connectedness, and self-sufficiency—empowering each participant and their family to achieve greater resilience and quality of life.
