The Anne Arundel County Department of Health, established in October 1930, serves as the sole government agency responsible for promoting and protecting the health of residents in Anne Arundel County. Under the authority of State and County regulations, the Department is tasked with enforcing a range of federal, State, and local health laws.

Beyond its regulatory and enforcement responsibilities, the Department provides a wide array of public health services, including those that are mandated, delegated, or locally initiated. The Department’s strategic direction is shaped with input from the Anne Arundel County Council—also serving as the County Board of Health—as well as the County Medical Society’s Advisory Committee and several other advisory councils.

With a workforce of nearly 700 employees—including physicians, nurses, social workers, sanitarians, counselors, therapists, and other allied health and support professionals—the Department of Health is committed to delivering high-quality, compassionate care. Their collective efforts make a significant impact, directly serving more than one in three county residents annually. Over 184,000 individuals benefit from personal health or screening services each year, while an additional 41,000 residents and businesses receive permits, inspections, and environmental health services through the Department.
