Facility Overview

The Institute for Human Services Inc – Sumner Center, located at 350 Sumner Street in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness. With a mission rooted in compassion and dignity, IHS provides comprehensive support including temporary shelter, transitional and permanent housing solutions, and essential wraparound services. The Sumner Center is one of IHS’s central facilities and offers integrated medical and psychiatric care through an on-site clinic, helping guests address both immediate health concerns and chronic conditions.

The facility serves as a hub for hospital referrals and post-acute medical care, with five medical respite homes—known as Tutu Bert’s Homes—available for homeless individuals discharged from hospitals who need continued monitoring but no longer require inpatient care. Through a dedicated street medicine program, IHS also brings critical healthcare services directly to unsheltered individuals across Oʻahu, building trust and encouraging access to supportive services. By combining housing support with medical stabilization, case management, and psychiatric care, the Sumner Center plays a vital role in Hawaiʻi’s continuum of care for the homeless population, helping clients regain independence and achieve lasting wellness.
