The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare leads a statewide, collaborative behavioral healthcare system dedicated to ensuring that adults with behavioral health needs have timely access to effective treatment and support services. As the designated state behavioral health authority, the Division of Behavioral Health focuses on serving Idahoans diagnosed with serious mental illness (SMI) or serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI), recognizing the diverse and complex needs of these populations.
Through a network of programs and services—including community-based supports, outpatient care, and inpatient hospitalization—the Division works to provide comprehensive behavioral health care across the state. Most adult mental health services are delivered through contracts with community providers, ensuring accessibility at the local level. To ensure equitable access, interpreter and language assistance services are available to individuals with limited English proficiency, as well as those who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or visually impaired.
